Rhyming on the North Sea

The awesome ocean speaks with many voices,
winds enhance the spectacle with eerie noises.
Young kids fly their kites that seagulls can defy,
Intrepid surfers skim the waves and fly.

The mighty waves roll, foam and roar,
They break on Noordwijk’s pristine shore
in high tide, low tide that repeat, reveal
eternity that pantheistically we feel.

We see the myriad coloured shells
and listen to the stories Neptune tells:
All life comes from the sea
–not only fish, but creatures yet to be.

On January first we brave the beach
It’s Nieuwjahrsduik as eager swimmers bet to reach
the magic of the frothing sea — at four degrees
— We run ashore and drink jenever not to freeze!
